Inpatient Treatment

Information from Chicago’s leading headache and migraine treatment center. When outpatient approaches are no longer sufficient, inpatient headache treatment offers an intensive, multidisciplinary path to recovery.

When inpatient treatment may be appropriate

Sometimes, headache disorders become so refractory or complex that outpatient care alone cannot provide relief. Inpatient treatment is considered when:

  • Headaches (or migraines) are frequent, severe, and debilitating, interfering with daily life
  • Patients have failed multiple outpatient therapies
  • Medication overuse or dependency (e.g. analgesic rebound) complicates treatment
  • There is a need for careful withdrawal (“detoxification”) under medical supervision
  • A monitored, structured environment is needed to break pain cycles and reestablish normal routines

At the Chicago Headache Center, we evaluate all patients thoroughly to decide whether inpatient care is the best next step.

Our inpatient program model

Our inpatient unit is designed to support patients in breaking chronic pain cycles and establishing long-term control. While hospitalized, patients remain engaged with everyday routines rather than being isolated: we encourage wearing street clothes, participating in therapeutic and recreational programs, and maintaining structure.

Each patient’s program is individually tailored, combining medical, behavioral, and supportive therapies.

An inpatient stay is not an endpoint but a reset. Upon discharge, patients transition into a carefully structured outpatient plan, using the momentum and gains achieved in the inpatient setting to maintain progress. Follow-up is critical—our team will work closely with you to monitor, adjust, and support long-term management.
