Botox For Headaches

Botox is one of our most popular treatments for headaches. It can help with chronic migraines and many patients have benefited from boxtox headache treatment.

Get the relief you need today

Botox was approved by the FDA in 2010 for the prevention of Chronic Migraine, and Dr. Torphy has been injecting Botox for patients living with Chronic Migraine since 2013.

According to Dr. Torphy, “Most headache physicians feel that Botox should be considered as part of the treatment regimen for patients who experience 15 or more headache days per month.

Of the newer treatments that we have available to help our patients, Botox is the option we have used the longest, so we have the most experience with it. Our experience with Botox gives our patients confidence not only in the treatment, but in our ability to administer it.

I generally recommend patients to give Botox at least three sessions, which are every three months, in order to see how effective it will actually be for them.”

As is the case with any treatment, nothing works for everyone. In the case of chronic migraine (people who have more than 15 headache days per month), however, Botox is arguably one of the best treatments available. Most patients see a reduction in days they experience headaches, and usually those headaches are less intense than before starting Botox treatment.
No. There is not a cure for migraines, but Botox injections can help lessen the frequency and severity of migraine episodes.
As is the case with any prevention treatment for migraine, many patients will need to continue treatment until their vulnerability to migraine attacks lessens. Most people who have migraine go through “periods” in their lives when they have more episodes of migraine, and times when they have fewer episodes. Botox is used during the period of time in a person’s life when they need a prevention regimen.
Botox is currently FDA-approved for chronic migraine, which is when a person has at least 15 headache days per month, 8 of which are considered migraine days. Most insurances require a person to try at least two of the “older” daily prevention medications before Botox treatments will be covered. If a person is uninsured or does not wish to try the “older” prevention medications first, we offer discounted “self-pay” prices.
The procedure, which is performed every three months, takes about 15 minutes and is performed in our Chicago or Naperville offices.
